Snowden is a 2016 historical, political thriller film by Oliver Stone and story by Stone and Kieran Fitzgerald. The film is based on two books “The Snowden Files” by Luke Harding and “Time of the Octopus” by Anatoly Kucherena.

The film was welcome to compete at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The director Thierry Frémaux saw the film, and lauded it, calling it a “decent film. It supplements Citizenfour grandly. It comprehends a considerable measure of things”. Frémaux said he needed the film to screen at Cannes, yet clarified that the film’s makers “need to go for the Oscars, so for them, a Cannes debut was excessively early.” It will appear at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival and will have its European premiere at the 64th San Sebastián Film Festival.

Richard Roeper gave the film 3 out of 4 stars, saying, “Snowden works best when it’s just Edward and the three journalists in that hotel room, sweating it out, or when we see the pattern of events that led him to commit acts that exposed the shocking practices of our government but also quite possibly created serious security breaches.”
